Skirmish was a game developed for my dissertation project to demonstrate a genre splicing method.
This was a solo project where I developed all assets and code exluding art.
This game was developed to test the theory of genre splicing as a concept using the card game and the tile-based strategy genres. The objective / expected end result of this process was to have a game that felt like 2 distinct genres.
Skirmish was inspired by games such as Balatro, Into The Breach and many other games drawing on either the card or strategy aspects of the respective game to try and indipendatly inform the development of either genre.
The game consists of 2 teams, the heros (player) and the enemies (AI). Each team has different characters with diffrent stats and abilities. The objective of the game is to defeat the enemies within the constrictions of a card based action system.
The AI system for this project was one of the largest challenges I encountered. To help emphasises the strategy genre the AI had to be challenging. To do this I used a senario based AI system where for every possible action the AI could take it would caclculate a senario value, save it, then after calculating all possible senarios select the highest value and execute that senario. The system was built and to be able to add difficulty levels using lower senario values in the future.
The ultimate results of this project were unclear. The expected results were not all correct and in addition to this definition for this genre splicing methodes and others were dificult to understand and unclear to testers when discussed. It was concluded that using genre splicing as a conceptual tool to help us define process of genre has potential but is flawed. The concept warrents more investigation.
Within this project the key features that I developed were:
